Coventry University Student Union Awards

Whilst at home over the Easter Break I received an email saying I had been nominated and now short listed to receive a CUSU Award. My first thought was confusion, as I am not on the executive of a society and not heavily involved with the student union. However, I went to buy my ticket and saw the list of nominees were up on the website. I had been shortlisted for ‘Best Source News Member’. I could not believe it, Source News was something I had joined out of curiosity and did not think it was something I was especially good at.

On the night of the Awards I went to Coventry Cathedral and sat amongst the excited crowd waiting for my category to be called. Even though I did not win, I still felt that I had achieved something impressive. As I am not a journalist student and have never studied journalism, to a great extent, my writing comes from the heart and most likely breaks a lot of journalistic rules that I do not know about. Another reason why I feel so proud to have been shortlisted for the award, is because writing is not something that comes naturally to me. Being dyslexic, I often struggle with words, yet my love of reading and writing pushes me to overcome these struggles. To be picked out of this large society as one of the top three members means a lot to me and I am excited to re-join the society next year and to continue to push my writing ability and to stretch myself further. However, I hope that I can continue to write on my blog over summer to try and improve my writing ability for my articles. This may include writing more travel blogs and writing more reviews about books or films as these are both things that I am passionate about.
