Exploring Media
Hopes for the Next Year
To my future self,
I hope you have enjoyed your first year at university (and I really hope you’ve achieved good grades!). During this year I would like to think that you have enjoyed whichever addvantage module you chose to take, especially as you had been looking forward to it. I hope you have chosen to take a module that allows you to come out with a professional certificate, as I feel this will be most beneficial to your professional skill set. I hope that this year has inspired and encouraged your creativity and helped it to develop in exciting and unexpected ways, which will then be demonstrated through both practical and written work.
I would like to assume that over the past year you have managed to read around a wider range of theorist’s and their views on the media landscape and consider how their views can be applied to the present day and the future. I feel this will make you more inquisitive as well as broaden your knowledge which is important. I also hope that in the past year your knowledge and understanding of important programmes and equipment has grown and developed, which will have hopefully allowed your practical skills to have improved.
I hope that during the year you have been involved with the East Asian Film Society as I believe it would have broadened your cultural appreciation and demonstrate the media within other cultures. It sounds interesting and different and would definitely be a step out of your comfort zone and it is important to push yourself into doing new and exciting things. I also hope you have done other activities linked with your media course over the year that have pushed your limits and enhanced your learning and enjoyment of the course.
I hope than being in a more independent learning atmosphere would have increased your confidence within independent tasks and learning, as well as increasing your confidence within group tasks via improving your ability to work with people you did not know, and pulling together everyone’s different strengths to succeed with the task at hand. This may have also helped to develop skills around conflict resolution and problem solving within a group, to make sure that all members of the team are happy with the finished product. These teamwork skills will be vitally important in a professional environment, and therefore the development of them during first year would be useful.
As you currently have no set idea on a career path for the future, I hope that in the past year by exploring different forms of media it may have opened your eyes to which aspects of the media you would like to work in by developing a greater understating and knowledge of the inner workings of all the different media industries and what it would take to fulfil future roles within the industry. However, if you still don’t know what you would like to do by the end of first year that is fine, but hopefully exploring the different units will have encouraged and excited you.
Good luck with second year!
From,
Alice
