A vital skill needed to succeed in working in the media is teamwork. I discovered this on my degree course as group work formed a main part of our modules. I feel that in the past two year my teamwork skills have dramatically improved and I now feel much more confident when doing group work. However, I wanted to learn more about how to build a strong team and therefore was excited to attend this workshop.

This GLP workshop was given by Nigel Bray, who was previously a project manager for BA Systems. I do not wish to work as a Project Manager, however, many of the skills involved in Project Management match with the skills I need to become a Producer in Radio or TV.

I was interested in this workshop, which was given by Warren Portlock, as I believe I have good leadership skills but wanted to develop them further and see how motivation linked into leadership. The workshop started by exploring why we need motivation and leadership. Motivation causes increased productivity, positivity, performance, and fortitude. Leadership is needed to bring out these motivational factors in other people, and this makes a good leader.

This workshop was stage two, of three, in communication skills. In the first workshop I learnt how non-verbal communication made up 55% of people’s communication, therefore it was good that this workshop focused on non-verbal communication, specifically body language.

‘Confident Communications’ was the first of three stages of exploring communication. The aim of this workshop was to identify my style of communication and to help build confidence when I am communicating. The workshop was structured though a mixture of teaching, discussions and activities (both individual and group). Before the workshop began I believed I had reasonable communication skills, as my degree focuses around group work.
