Joining The Global Leadership Programme

During my first term at university I have attended several speaker events which highlighted the importance of upskilling ourselves, so we can have as many qualifications and skills as possible to help us in the future. This was in my mind when I was invited to join Coventry University’s Global Leadership Programme (GLP), for free (instead of paying the £300 which is normally required) due to my academic achievements. I officially joined the programme in January and I have started completing the activities needed to achieve the certificate.

GLP is an extracurricular option which aims to develop students into future leaders. It runs alongside my degree, and allows me to attend practical and exciting workshops which will increase my global awareness and networking skills, explore a variety of cultures through interactive activities, and learn how to present myself. The programme allows me access to over seventy internationally renowned speakers each year. There is the option to learn a language, and attend UK industrial trips to multi-national companies.

I wanted to join as I am positive this certificate will help me in the future when I am looking for jobs, and demonstrate I have the skills needed to be an outstanding member of a company. Due to the structure of my degree I can successfully fit in all the extra hours of work, which is also helping me to improve my time management and organisational skills. Another benefit of the programme is that I get to meet likeminded students from different degrees, across all years. I strongly believe the skills taught at the workshops; such as communication, presentation, networking, teamwork and leadership, all enhance my degree as I will be able to implement these skills throughout my degree. Whilst doing my degree I want to make the most of all the opportunities available, and I believe that GLP is one of the best additional provisions offered at this university.

I am excited to continue with the programme and benefit from an array of speakers both in the media industry and other companies and attend industrial trips both in the UK and abroad. By accessing GLP in my first year of university, this means I have three years to participate in and learn from the programme. I will be adding reflections of all the events I take part in, under the ‘GLP’ section of this website, which will work as a tracker for how the programme helps both my personal and professional development over the next few years.
