Expanding Skills - Radio
Through being part of Source Media, I have the opportunity to have my own university radio show. When I first signed up to Source I thought this was the section that would interest me the least, but it is safe to say I was wrong. Since October I have been trying to get the radio show, ‘Media Highlights’ off the ground, and on the 4th of February this dream became a reality.
I am one of four presenters of ‘Media Highlights’. The idea for this show was initially designed by myself and Natasha then Scott joined and after that John. ‘Media Highlights’ works as a review show, discussing each month’s new films, TV shows and book releases, as well as covering any big events, for example the Oscars. Now four of us produce the show this has enabled us to branch out with our topics as we all have different opinions and tastes in media, which makes the show more interesting and exciting.
We tried and failed due to technical difficulties two weeks running, to get the show started in January. We decided to do a one off Saturday show, to get the feeling of the equipment and what it is like to be live on the radio. At first there was a nervous excitement with nobody really knowing what was going to happen. Natasha controlled the computers sorting out and organising music and I was in charge of the mix desk, making sure the microphones were on and off at the right times and attempting to get the volumes correct.
The start of the show was a bit rusty, as we were not quite sure what we were doing or what to say, but after a while it became natural and flowing and it was actually an amazing experience. Hosting a radio show about a subject you’re passionate about is so much fun and being able present it with friends means that that you can relax and enjoy what you are talking about.
I cannot wait for the future shows and I am sure that over time we will improve and become more confident, and be able to attract more listeners.
