Week 27
Space to Breathe
Compared to the last two weeks of fast paced and mixed work this week has been very relaxed. I have not done any more work with TV, which I have missed, but it has given me time to catch up with my radio work. I have continued to book interviews for Ruth’s show, I am even now booking content for June which feels like a massive success as when I first joined the shows Ruth did not have daily interviews and there was no advanced content planned or scheduled. It is good to see that the hard work I put in to researching and making connections is flourishing and will hopefully allow me to advance book a lot of content for Ruth after I leave in August. This will ensure that she has time to adjust to producing her show solo again. I’ve had a couple of issues with interviews this week, the first is when booking future pre-records I am having to work extra hard with time differences as we are preparing for the clocks to change in the UK. Also, I had a difficult guest to work with, who’s plans for the interview and how he wished to do it kept changing, making it difficult, but on the day all went well. Lastly, one of our guests this week was registered blind, therefore I had to work extra carefully when hosting the guest and make sure that everything was okay with HR. All of these challenges are helping me to improve as a Producer and in the industry there will always be challenges to overcome when working with guests.
I have continued to edit and upload audio to Soundcloud. I also have been working to improve the appearance of the Soundcloud, by making new Presenter playlists and adding recent audio into the playlist as well as going through and cleaning up the audio. This project will take a long time, as there is over 7 years of content on Soundcloud and the head of radio has decided they do not want anything older than 12 months on Soundcloud unless it is particularly popular.
As the next UCB Appeal is approaching I have started contacting people to request to record impact stories and adding any responses onto Raisers Edge. This will be my last Appeal here at UCB and therefore my work with testimonies afterwards will decrease. Even though I often do not enjoy the appeals as much as my everyday work, I have enjoyed speaking to and editing the Impact Stories, it is uplifting to hear about how the work I am doing here is actually impacting and changing lives. Hearing their gratitude always re-motivates me to keep improving my work as it is actually affecting people. I think after a while it can become easy to forget that what I am doing at my desk is being broadcast out to our 200,000 weekly listeners per station, and affecting their lives in different ways.
Other tasks I have completed during the week, have been contacting listeners who have won competitions and sending off their prizes, attended Staff Meetings and I had another ILM session this week, about Developing Team work. This session was a lot of fun and reinforced the knowledge I already had on the subject from The Global Leadership Programme at university. I have recorded and edited an audio piece for Anne’s Sunday show section ‘The Wall’. I have had meetings with Samuel about the Bank Holiday Special as he is going down to the rehearsals on Sunday to record the interviews using the questions I have created.
Next week is looking to be a similar week. It is nice to re-focus myself back into radio, but I feel I need to find new ways to be more creative and push myself as it can be easy to fall into a creative slump.
