Exploring Media
Week 16
Christmas Time
The last week before Christmas has been slower than expected and in away harder as my job is very reliant on general broadcast projects, which have now all been wrapped up for the year, and helping the presenters with their content. However, as the presenters are working over Christmas, it means there is not much I can help with.
Nevertheless, I have continued doing Soundcloud uploads for all of the presenters. This is a part of my job I really enjoy as I love audio editing. An extra editing job I had this week, was the recording and editing of one of Anne’s, The Wall, sessions. I enjoyed doing it as it reminded me of doing testimonies. From this job I have discovered that I really like speaking to people especially to do recordings, as I feel confident about it and believe my communication skills have grown massively due to doing it so regularly.
I have had to do a lot of re-arrange of interviews for Ruth this week. Luckily, I managed to book her a festive themed interview with Bake Off Contestant Martha Collinson for Friday. However, there was a last minute decision to cancel the live interview we were doing on the Wednesday, due to concerns about the individual. This meant I had to fill the Wednesday and then also fill and re-arrange the gaps it then created in January. I managed to carefully balance it so that January is still fully booked but so is the rest of December. This is why I need to be flexible in my role as I never know when there will be a change in plan which I will need to organise.
I had a meeting with Ruth about specialised content. For two weeks is February we will do two weeks of content focused around relationships. Topics would cover things like romantic relationships, relationship breakdowns, singleness, friendships, parenting, work relationships, and issues affecting relationships. I have done a lot of research and reached out to a lot of charities and organisations and hopefully will be getting more dates booked in the New Year. The only issue with trying to organise interviews at this point in December is that a lot of people are already on Christmas holidays and therefore do not reply.
When doing phone interviews they sound better quality when done through Skype. Therefore, for those who are happy to use Skype but lack confidence I have started to do trial calls for them, when I will phone them and they can practice using it. So far this has been a success and hopefully there can be an increase use in Skype for interviews in the New Year for Ruth’s show.
This week I have had another ILM session, I am still really enjoying participating in the training and the topics are helping me understand what it means to be a leader in the workplace. For example, I believed I have good project management skills, as it is the role I would often take on in group work at university. However, by completing training and assignments about project management there is so much I did not realise was a part of it and now I feel that my skills are becoming more useful for the workplace. For example, in group work you never have to work with finances or GANNT charts when organising your project, now I am happy to do both and understand their importance for project success.
Having finished the first 3 months of my placement, I cannot believe how fast it has gone. I seem to I have come so far in such little time and I am excited to keep growing my skills and developing new ones. I am really enjoying the workplace atmosphere and the longer I am here the less nervous I feel about graduating and starting a job as it no longer feels like jumping into the unknown.
