Personal Statment

(500 words)

At the beginning of this academic year I did not know what industry I wanted to be part of in the future. However, throughout this module I began deciding I wanted to work in the broadcasting industry and I have started becoming the professional I need to be to succeed in this industry. I have reached this decision after a meeting with the Coventry Careers Team, where I had the opportunity to talk through possible career routes exploring where my interests were. One highlights of this module was having lectures on how to write a CV. I had never considered that I should have a creative CV as I had never heard of this. What made this even more helpful was the opportunity to go through my CV with the Coventry Careers Team and the Media Employability Team. I believe my CV is now the best it can be and hopefully will show employers that I am a professional, not just a student. I feel much more prepared to apply for further placement opportunities after the lectures on how to find a placement, and interviewing skills. Hopefully after my upcoming short work experience, I will feel even more confident when applying and interviewing for my yearlong placement. Apparently in the broadcasting industry it is not only what you know but who you know. I did not know anything about networking at the start of this module, but after the lecture I understood the basics but still was not confident about doing it. After attending graduate fairs and the Creative Industries talk and networking event I began feeling more confident about networking with professionals, I definitely need to continue to develop this further semester. This semester I attended a talk on how to use LinkedIn. This was extremely useful as it is an important networking tool. I have begun using LinkedIn to connect with and talk to industry professionals, however, I need to further develop this as I am not making the most of all of the functions. This semester I undertook a 12 week radio training programme at Hillz FM, a community radio station in Coventry. This has helped me to develop more skills within the industry and given me deeper insight into what working in radio would be like. I hope to continue volunteering at Hillz FM as a mentor at the studio. I would like to find other ways to build my industry skills. I currently have no experience in TV and I will need to explore this further in the coming semester. I also hope to have opportunities to speak to industry professionals in broadcasting, as there were limited opportunities to meet broadcasters at the graduate fairs and other networking events. After this module I feel more like a media professional than a student and I hope to keep building and improving to give myself the best chance to succeed in the industry.
