ALICE WASS
Exploring Media
Further Training
Hillz FM:
I applied and accepted to join a training programme at Hillz FM a community radio station in Coventry, specifically targeting Hillfields. The scheme was 12 weeks long and focused on radio production. I attended sessions every Tuesday morning, 10am to 1pm, and occasionally the Friday morning sessions if my lectures started later in the day. Over the weeks I have learnt so much about the radio industry and have massively increased my confidence. Whilst there I learnt about Ofcom regulations, and community radio law, I planned and researched show ideas, conducted live on air interviews, presented shows, created jingles and idents, recorded adverts, learnt how to use the mixing desk and controllers and organised music through a variety of playout systems. This training scheme gave me vital knowledge about the radio industry and the hands on approach to learning suited me well as every week was new and exciting. The skills I have learnt at Hillz FM I have started implementing on my own university radio show, ‘Media Highlights’. I also belive this training will help me when applying for further placements in the radio industry and I would be entering with a background knowledge and basic understanding on the subject. After I had completed the programme I was invited to come back next semester to start training to become a mentor for others taking the radio programme and teaching them how to use the systems I had learnt, however, sadly this will depend on if my lectures fit in with the days Hillz FM would want me to be in. Below are some photos from some of the sessions at Hillz FM.
