Week 5
Part Of The Team
This week has contained a whole host of new experiences, and I now really feel I am part of the team and that the work I am doing is contributing to UCB in a positive way.
This week I have been mainly focused on working on Ruth O’Reilly-Smith’s show, ‘This Is My Story’. After the decision that my role will include helping Ruth with the production side of her show I received a lot of administration tasks which needed urgent attention. This started with creating a log from 2017 to the present, of all the interview guests Ruth has had on her show, as there was no record of this. The task involved a lot of research and going through archive audio which took a few days to complete. Now it is done it will make working on her show much easier for both of us, and all future interviews will be added in to keep the log up-to-date. I have also continued to find and organise guests to come in to do interviews with Ruth, and have managed to get a few scheduled for the coming weeks.
I was also helping another presenter, Matt, to get interviews for his show. A whole host of new songs have been added to the playlist, so I have been contacting the artists to try and get them to do interviews with Matt for the music section of his show. Sadly, I only managed to get a few organised but Matt was still grateful for my help.
Last week, I recorded my first Impact Story with Rebecca in the studio. This week I recorded two more, all on my own. As mentioned in my last reflection I was quite nervous about doing this as it was using equipment and software which I had not used before, however, both interviews were a success. I was more confident than during my first attempt, and I managed to be upbeat and friendly which helped the people I was interviewing to relax and give better answers, as it felt more like a chat with a friend. I have more Impact Story recordings scheduled for the coming weeks and I hope that over time I will keep improving. The next stage with the stories will be to start editing them, which I am excited to try once I have more frequent access to Adobe Audition.
As previously mentioned, I have been learning how to use Audition with Sam. This week I was given a list of four interviews which needed to be edited and uploaded to Soundcloud, the difference this time was that I was going to be editing and uploading them on my own. I felt confident that it would be okay as I had written out the process of everything that I needed to do on Audition, and even though I was not particularly fast at editing the pieces, I managed to get them all edited to the standard asked for by UCB and uploaded them. As I am confident with using other Adobe Software, I feel that Audition is starting to make sense already and I know over time I will definitely become adept at it.
I have an extremely exciting project coming up next week which I cannot wait to share. The positive thing about my placement is that if I want to get involved with something UCB are doing I am always welcome to join in, meaning I get exposed to a wide range of experiences and I feel sure I will continue to develop and learn a lot about the broadcasting industry during my time here.
